AK Complete Home Renovations on Aug 06, 2012At 1 1/4 of an inch, or 3 cm, granite can allow for great functionality. As most granite is cut at this thickness, it also provides for less seams and greater cover-up space. Slabs at this cut can be as large as 105 x 54 inches, meaning they can cover a greater space & have less seams. A 1 1/4" granite is also great for customization, unique edges, and extensions off the island for bar seating.Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Aug 07, 2012Wow! I guessed 1/2"...guess I would have been in a mess! Of course I have never looked for granite counters, so don't know anything about them. Just proves you need to do your homework before buying anything! By the way, how do those granite tops that "cover" existing tops work out? I have seen them advertised, but personally would be a little skeptic of them.Helpful Reply

Linda @ it all started with paint on Aug 07, 2012I guessed with Jeanette ... and was wrong. I should've measure my quartz counters first. But I didn't want to cheat ... :)Helpful Reply

Rachel on Aug 07, 2012We painted the cabinets white (they were brown), brought an island from The Restore (habitat for humanity, love that store). So its now time to put a countertop on the island and the redo the kitchen. We are also thinking of putting in a bench by the windows. Just some ideas.Helpful Reply

Susan B on Aug 07, 2012Speaking of countertops, has anyone used the new Thomas' stainless steel paint? It's for appliances, countertops etc. Looks really easy in the video and can't beat the price. i think it's only 55.00Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Aug 08, 2012We retopped our island a year or so ago and found a 48"x36" butcher block piece 2" thick for $50! We cut it to size, sanded and sealed it and I absolutely LOVE it! Our cabinets are dark and we have blond oak laminate...the butcher block was perfect! Our countertops are white so we knew we needed something light!Helpful Reply

Z on Sep 11, 2012Rachel, have you decided on your counters yet? If not have you looked at the quartz products? We've had Silestone for almost nine years now and are very happy with our choice. Jeannette, my sister in law had that type of granite counter top in her kitchen and loves it. You'd never know it wasn't solid granite. She's only had a year or two so not sure how it lasts in the long run, but it sure looks great.Helpful Reply
