Ahna @ Easier Than I Thought on Nov 02, 2012My backyard looks very similar. We have a couple acres of woods. Just this summer, we had a landscaper come out and take out a lot of the junk trees (less than 3" in diameter) and brush. Then, he used wood chips to create trails down to our lake. We used the natural space in between the trees to dictate where the trails went. Our plan is to mulch some spaces and plant some things next year as well as build a fire pit in a clearing. Not sure if any of this helps, but I suggest you get some quotes. At the very least it will help you get some ideas. It turned out to be WAY more reasonable to have someone do it than I thought. In fact, I would have done it long ago had I known how affordable it would be. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Melissa K on Nov 02, 2012I like these ideas a lot and gives me an idea of what to do with the fire pit we own and never use and large rocks. Lovely...Also, thanks to Doug, I have decided to allow the paths to meander their own way down to the road and am using the 50 years of straw I have raked become the path markers along with other rocks and azaleas. You guys are famous! Your ideas are great because they help with what I want to do myself.Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Nov 04, 2012Just one thought for you. If you do a firepit of any kind, please remember that embers float UP and to give ample and plenty of room overhead free from limbs that might catch on fire.Helpful Reply

Melissa K on Nov 04, 2012Yeah, the trees are about 40-50 ft high with dense canopy. Firepit is only a thought. Has anyone ever made a firepit using a store-bought one dressed up in the ground surrounded by large stones. I would like to place the firepit in the ground. Great info 4S because everything back there is extremely flammable and brittle for some reason. Thanks.Helpful Reply

Melissa K on Nov 04, 2012As for tree removal, I would really like to keep the hardwoods, but the pines overshadow them by about 20 ft. I have removed the lower branches of most of the trees already and started raking up the pathways, but will now do it from a design standpoint and stake out the areas.Helpful Reply
