Fran McCarty on Jan 19, 2015I would move the dresser from behind the couch to the wall. Move the kids play table further out into the room. I would add a tall row of bookshelves behind the couch. (Securing them so they don't tip over if the kids decide to climb on them.) Adding baskets for storage. This kids the kids a niche of their own and extra storage for toys and books. Also gives the grown ups a little niche of their own for watching TV but still be able to watch over the kids and spend time with them.Helpful Reply

Marion Nesbitt on Jan 19, 2015If you have the room and budget, I'd add a bank of cabinetry along one whole wall. Open cavity for the TV, etc. , some counter space, some open shelves for books, nautical themed accessories, etc., lower cabs for storage.. Maybe a couple of round framed mirrors on a wall somewhere to look like portholes. Sky is the limit on incorporating your chalkboard, faux woodgrain, etc..Helpful Reply

CK on Jan 19, 2015I just did a room very similar to yours....a room with two different uses. As a mom myself (although my kids are grown and now have kids of their own) I know how important storage is :-) I'd get (or build to size) storage shelves along a lot of that wall. The media side could house your DVD, etc. The playroom side would have toys, games, etc. Make the shelves the right size to hold baskets so what 's in them is hidden then it'll look great & less cluttered! Leave a few spaces in the bookcase/storage unit open for pretty display things. Since you love the beach theme, you could use some large shells, some coral, diver floats, etc. ...whatever you have or would like to use to carry out your beach theme. The thing is, keep in mind you can have storage and 'pretties' too :-) I would also consider a little better furniture placement. Why is everything pushed so closely to that long wall? Your room will look less long and narrow if you pull the couch and the dresser behind it, away from the wall even if it's just 6-10". It gives the illusion there's more space.Helpful Reply

Your Organized Friend on Jan 27, 2015I just worked on a similar idea in a room. We placed shorter bookcases with wicker baskets to hold toys. Above that we put a colorful calendar (color coded for the children) plus a white board so mom could write reminders for the children. I wouldn't go navy in a basement too dark, of the options you mention I like the stencil the best.Helpful Reply

Laurie Powell on Jan 27, 2015I do not see a TV. I like your tan paint on your walls. To me it makes the basement warm & cozy looking. Is it gloss or satin paint? I would paint wide vertical stripes with FLAT paint but the same exact color & it will make it look 2 tone. The vertical stripes will add height to the basement too. The usual procedure for this is to paint the entire wall with flat paint. Then add the gloss or satin stripes over that. I would place the TV on the dresser & use it for the TV stand. Or even buy another one. Then you can store tapes & DVDs in the drawers, along with games. If you need a place for a cable box or a VCR, remove the top drawers & place them in there. If you keep the wall & flooring the neutral colors, you can change the way a room looks just buy adding your colors with pillows & accessories. The photo I added, shows a wall like I am talking about. For large walls try to find large nautical decor pieces. You could even use a large mirror. And yes, I like the idea of different areas for movies, kids & maybe a game or card table. You could even paint the dresser using navy blue with white & then you could do the same to the kids table to match. Please post pictures when you are finished with the room! :)1 marked as helpful Reply

Elizabeth on Feb 01, 2015My first thought was two blackboards, and as long as you have a theme....go with something that would go along with that....Like a sailboat and have the sails as the blackboard, or a life preserver in the middle of the two blackboards and have them both be the same size and blackboards, with nautical themes stenciled around them like a border.Helpful Reply

Alys on Jun 19, 2016I've used removable decals to good effect. They're inexpensive, easy to remove as the children grow, and they don't damage the wall.Helpful Reply
