I wouldnt mind getting a much older one if I knew where to find one. I remember them working real well.

Douglas Hunt on Jan 02, 2013I have a friend who swears by her Breville "Smart Oven" toaster oven. It's big enough that she often uses it instead of her regular oven. I think the old toasters were basically designed to toast sandwich-sliced white bread, which they did well, but these days we are confronted (happily) with a veritable cornucopia of breads. I've burned more toast than I've toasted successfully in my small cheap Black and Decker. http://www.brevilleusa.com/cooking/ovens/the-smart-oven.htmlHelpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jan 02, 2013A blow torch will get it done fast. Or just eat cereal. I know you want to get right out and do all those fancy craft things you find on Home Talk, but is it really necessary to get started 30 seconds sooner? I cannot help you on the toaster, but perhaps the reason for the slower cooking is the wattage. When you purchase a new one, check for the wattage it draws. The higher the wattage the hotter it cooks.Helpful Reply

Bernice H on Jan 02, 2013@Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com You are toooo funny! Thanks for the first guffaw of the day! ok, about wattage..what IS high and low wattage on a toaster? And I am assuming the higher the price the higher the wattage? I was thinking they just dont make toasters the way they used to, ie heavier, ..better able to handle more heat? @Douglas Hunt yes my current one is cheap too, I have seen toasters at Wallyworld for $7..huh? No mine is not $7, but it was not more than 12 or 15..it takes so long to toast the bread gets almost tough and stale before it is brown! and I havent burned anything in it! hmm wonder if I would be safe with a blow torch! ha!Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jan 02, 2013The higher the wattage, the hotter it would become. And your correct. more money more watts. The $25 dollar toaster will work, but will take longer. You should be able to compare them by looking on the outside package for that information. Also if you turn your toaster over, there should be stamped somewhere on it what the watts are. Our toaster in our home is 1500 watts. It is a four slice or bagel type toaster. So when you compare be sure your looking at the same type as toasters with more slice capacity will have a higher wattage then those with only four slice ability.Helpful Reply

Terri J on Jan 02, 2013I have & love my Black and Decker toater/oven. It has settings for toast, bagels, and you can also cook meat in it. It has temperature and time controls, and is about the size of a 4 piece regular toaster. I got it at Lowe's and it wasn't very expensive either!Helpful Reply

Carroll A on Jan 02, 2013I have a Krups toaster. I love it. It has a top warming tray, defrost mode for frozen breads. You can adjust the height of the rack so no digging out an English muffin because it did not pop up high enough. Here is a review I found on toasters. http://www.metaefficient.com/kitchen-products/best-toasters.html Mine is the first one listed. I have used this one for about 4 years now. Not had any trouble.Helpful Reply
