Drywall skylight repair disaster

Debby
by Debby
I didn't want skylights anymore, so asked that they be dry walled, textured and painted over to look like the rest of the ceiling. This is what I got. He is supposed to come back to correct, but my confidence is gone. What can be done? What was done wrong? Sorry, but this looks like something I did myself.
Two skylights- can you tell where they were?

Who did this job for you? It's the worst I've ever seen, and I'm sure you could have done it yourself! I would ask for my money back and hire someone else. I'm sorry he messed this up so bad on you. Ask a friend, or your Local Home Depot if they have an inexpensive but experienced drywall guy, It's a small area and shouldn't cost you much at all.

@ He should have been honest and told you he wasn't able to. :( But you'll be able to find a dry-waller who'll be good and shouldn't charge you very much, It's not a big area! Good luck and I'm hoping it'll be done right, and beautifully for you!

If you have to redo it yourself you can use a tissue paper texture to cover it. I used it on the ceiling in a farm house renovation.

      @Shelley @Shelley THANK you!

Did he remove the frame of the window? Where you there during his work? I agree, get your money back... my concern is if he done that bad on what you do see, what did he do on your roof to make it leak proof.... I wouldn't let him near my place again and tell who ever gave you his name that he sucks! Report to the BBB, most cities require all construction company's to be registered and insured, is he?

@Leigh Rowan, I had roofers remove the skylights first, and then they put a new Roof and decking over where the sky lights were. He is a painter, and painted several rooms for me, and did a good job. When it came to painting my ceiling, I asked if he could patch the area, then paint, and he said he could.

Willing to bet he didn't add any insulation where the openings used to be..

@ @Pete Wells , The skylights were removed by roofers, and new decking and roof went over where the lights were, then I asked my painter if he could fix the "holes" when he painted the ceiling. I don't know if he put insulation or not, I will ask when he comes back.

I, too think it looks as though the framework and all the interior parts of the skylights were not removed, just patched over. I feel for you, I can hardly believe he would think it acceptable! Good luck!

I can't believe you got rid of all the natural light. I'm sad.
    • Debby Debby on Apr 24, 2015
@ @Stella Love I know what you mean, I did love them at first, but I live in the middle of "the woods", and sap and other debris from the trees were constantly on the windows of the high pitched roof, making it difficult to clean. Then the leaking started, so they became more and more trouble. It was time for them to "go".

Unfortunately this is not the way to hide skylights. Our school district did the same thing years ago to a Frank Lloyd Wright style building. This has been a leaky mold issue ever since.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. That is a shame this has happened to you. I hope you find a solution that is not to costly and looks nice.

@ Honey I edited it because I didn't want to sound like i was being critical. After I read what I wrote, I thought it sounded to me like I was being condescending. I didn't fully look at other posts and after I read what you wrote and some other posts, there were things I had repeated that you had already done. :) .

Well he came back to fix it. JUST MADE THE PROBLEM WORSE! So he asked to give him one more chance to fix this, he's going to get some advice from his friends?

Oh, no, looks like he has added another layer to the original mess he made! You must be pulling your hair out at this point!

This is fine with me. He fixed it as best he could. I think his problem was using way too much MUD, he really just needed a good coat of paint and some texturizing.

Hi Debby, That does look better! I agree with you about the paint and texturizing! :)
