How do I run electrical lines
-
Gail on Apr 23, 2015Missy, If you've never done electrical work before, you should probably have an electrician do it for you. You can learn-- books, Google, watching someone else; but start small and take every safety precaution you are advised to do. Without care and knowledge of working with electricity you could kill yourself, someone else who comes across your bad wiring attempt, or burn down your house. Good luck!Helpful Reply

BS on Apr 23, 2015UBC (universal building code), which has been adopted by most municipalities, requires that a licensed electrician perform the types of work that you describe. As Gail explains, the potential for catastrophe is enormous when an unqualified person attempts diy projects involving electricity. I won't wish you good luck. I plead with you to use common sense and hire a professional to complete these projects for you.Helpful Reply

Julies1949 on Apr 24, 2015This is not a DIY. You can install the ceiling fans yourself, but the wiring is absolutely something you need to have done by a certified electrician. Given that you will have n electrician there to do the wiring, I would get them to install the fans too. They will have it done in minutes.Helpful Reply

Marion Nesbitt on Apr 26, 2015Anything electrical - get a pro. If something goes wrong, your insurance company will deny a claim. In addition, you may end up doing something that causes a hazard.Helpful Reply

Jessie on Apr 27, 2015If you have to add new wiring definitely get an electrician if you have to run wire to your breaker box you don't want to touch that and yes your insurance would not cover you if something went wrong.. If you are connecting to existing wiring ie removing a light and using the same wiring for the ceiling fan it is typically fairly simple. The wiring on your fan will match in color to the existing wiring...after shutting off the power at the breaker box and using a voltmeter to make sure there is no power to your project strip the plastic sheathing off each wire with wire strippers. Twist black to black (matching the sheathing color the actual wire is not black...white to white and ground to ground (often a green color) use electrical tape to cover each 'twist' entirely leaving no bare wires then screw on wire nuts to the ends. It is a good idea to do some research first and find some pictures of what I just described...a visual is very helpful.Helpful Reply
