Big fam, little house

Hi, we are a family of 7 in a 10 sq, 3 bedroom home. The older 3 are in one room, the main room, twins in another, and my husband and 1 in another. Can you give me any ideas about organizing their double BIR.

Did you ever watch the TV show "The Duggars"? I think you could get some great ideas by looking at their home setup. They also have a website. ;o)

When I was a kid (family of 8) we had bedrooms. My brother in one, parents in another. We girls decided to use one room for sleeping (2 bunk beds) and the other for dressing room complete with our dressers, full length wall mirror, makeup on one dresser and hair styling on another. We lived a very minimalist lifestyle so there wasn't very much in the way of decorations. What we had we reporpused into a workable setup

Use under bed storage, use space bags to store off season bedding and clothing. Bunk beds make for more floor space. Search organization on Pinterest for millions of no cost or cheap ideas.

if you don't want bunks ( you did not say how old are the boys)you can place 2 beds end to end so foot of beds meet if you are lucky and have a space between them you can put a set of draws even if small set then the other bed could go other area of room that would give you lots of under bed storage then use tubs you could put winter clothes in half and have some for toys storage is what you would be after I would think you can get or make bunks that have the two beds and desk , plus draws and under bottom bed storage they even have a bookcase at one end hope this helps

Not sure what a 10 sq. three bedroom is. Do you mean the 3 bedrooms are each 10 feet by 10 feet square? Do you have any other rooms you don't use a lot i.e. dining room (if you have an eat-in kitchen), den or screened in patio which could be used to house a couple of children? And there is the Murphy Bed, that folds up to the wall, when not in use...leaving space to move around and play during the day for younger kids. There are also the "single beds" that have built in drawers underneath so you wouldn't need dressers for clothes, etc.

Guess I typed too much for the space above. Any way to continue: what about a Murphy Bed, or the single bed with the drawers under so you don't need dressers for everyone?

you don't have to have the clothes in the same room as the beds. I knew a family who kept the clothes in one room - each girl had a rack with laundry baskets for her clean clothes (dirty clothes all went in one place). That was their closet/dressing room. You don't mention how many are girls or boys so am guessing at that......if you do hand-me-downs, one way to keep them straight is to designate the oldest child's clothes with a small dot on the back inside of the collar or waistband; when that is passed to the next child, add another dot; when they pass it to the next one, add another dot; so at a glance you (& they!) can tell what clothing currently belongs to whom..... shoes can all stay in a hallway or entry, put a rail with coat-hooks on it about 8 inches (20 cm) off the floor, & hang shoes on that so as to keep them in pairs & off the floor..... I'd use walls as much as possible, frankly! ....as they grow I suspect one challenge will be to allot space as needed even if some hobbies or needs require more space than others. Stamp collecting doesn't need as much room as bicycle repair for example. If you give allowances to each child, with possibilities of earning additional money as they wish (& as you can afford & have need), then you could "rent out" space in your room for example, for extra things of theirs.

Hi thanks everyone for your help one of the problems is the age gap i have a girl turned 11 today a boy who turns 4 in October, a little girl 3 in june and twins born jan. I feel bad for the 11 yr old who to take everything in her stride but is also starting to grow up and it is a hard age she wants to be little but is also becoming a young lady at the moment she want to share but i imagine soon she will want her own space. Will post pics tomorrow of how its organised i try to have spaces for her older things.

Small homes pose challenges and privacy is hard to come by. I would put the two girls in one room, and the boy in another with the twins. The girls at least will have more in common decorating wise so it will be easier to accommodate them in the coming years. Depending on how high your ceilings are I would raise the older girls bed to bunk bed height and use the space underneath with curtains to make her own private play space that will become a hang out or desk area as she gets older. In small homes you have to use every inch of available space, and vertical space is often overlooked. Hang vertical net organizers from ceiling hooks to replace toy boxes, raise the younger kids beds a little and add drawers underneath so you can reclaim floor space where dressers used to be. Rebuild the inside of closets with multiple hanging levels and shelves with baskets, you can put more levels in since the kids are young and their clothes are small, then take extra rails out as they grow. Put out of season things in totes on shelves up at ceiling height since you will only need to get to them a few times a year. Take off closet doors and use curtains instead so if you need to you can place furniture differently not having to take the swing of doors into account.

Hi thanks everyone just up with twins now 6mth old and not sleeping through night☺ i an trying all the clothes in one room and the twins cots and the three older ones in the main room with all the toys. Thanks heaps for all your help.
