If your bathroom is small, tear out the wall and put up wallboard and finish any way you choose. If the bathroom is large consider some of the products they have to cover outdated tile. There is a particular product called Smart Tile. They have many options and it is very easy to use. Otherwise you can try the new tile paint which works wonderfully if you do not mind the tile image under the pain. Good luck.

They sell drywall specifically for bathrooms, which inhibits mold growth.....(even in a half bath mold can become a problem)
