How to remove cultured marble shower surround and floor pan?

I have a cultured marble shower surround and wondering what is usually behind the cultured marble walls. I guess I am wanting confirmation that I should replace whatever is there with some sort of water barrier. I want to tile the walls and would like to have advice before I start ripping it out.

If it is an older shower there is probably just green board, a type of drywall that is a little water resistant, and that is attached to the studs. If you are pulling out the marble this will have to go too as it will probably be damaged anyway.
So start over with a cementitious board, like Hardibacker or Denshield (whatever is available in your area) or the Schleuter kerdi system, etc. Be sure to seal well, with something like RedGuard. I am not endorsing these products, they are just what I have used over the years. You can tile over them. Good luck with your project!
I agree whole-heartedly with Pamela's advice. I've used those products as well and they are an excellent system.
Thank you so much for your quick response and advice. Wish me luck!!
Good Luck with the project Carla!
