I've taken out the old tile and wonderboard to expose the existing studs. To my surprise they had just used 2x2 wood studs for the framing. I have not removed the floor tile and pan yet. Of course it is a custom size, so I don't believe a pre-fabricated shower unit will work. Contractors are quoting crazy high prices because it is a small job. I'd like to try it myself but I'm stuck...

if you can find the pan size you need and are good at DIY and you can check in YouTube for assistance, I believe you should be able to do it.
If you think your know how is up to par, try it. They have books at the library or you can purchase a book at Homedepot or Lowe's on bathroom projects
