Can you tile over existing marble bath surround?

I am trying to think of ways to avoid ripping out my bath surround and was wondering if it is possible to just add decorative tile directly over the existing flat/plain surround slab. The surround is only like 2 feet tall on all 3 sides.

Jessica Keyes Milligan.... my boyfriend does tile and other surfaces ( also flooring) for a living . He said to use thinset to put the tile on , not mastic . He asked if the marble is faux surround or real stone..?

...Okay :) you're welcome. Also wants to know the size of it , and is it mosaic, stone, ceramic or glass tile ? This will determine application . As for basics... He said to ' scuff it up ' a bit with some coarse sandpaper or sanding block , wipe off the residue from sanding.THEN PUT UP YOUR TILE , spread the thinset , working in one area at a time , then apply your tile in the sections you have spread the thinset.

If you go with a mosaic , you need to spread the thinset with a 1/8 ' v-notch' trowel, and the same thing( tool) as for the glass and stone . I hope this helps , keep me posted ! :)
