Highly recommend using flocked hangers. They are thin & can give you much more room. You can cascade your hangers as well by using hooks or soda can tabs. I group like clothing together and sort by weight and sub group by color. It doesn't save room but makes it much easier to find items.
A picture would be very helpful so we could see what you are working with. If a picture isn't possible could you give us some dimensions?
I would use lots of bins of all kinds that maximize your space. Even a cubby shelf if you can get that in :)
