Sounds like an opportunity for some awesome storage space!

it actually depends where you live....I live in rattlesnake/scorpion country...I would not put things in there for them to hide in. My sister lives in Montana...I wouldn't put things in there that could freeze and bust....in no condition should you store anything flammable....lawn mower with gas, weedeater, gas can, varnish, lacquer, aerosol sprays

Crawl spaces are intended for access to pipes and such within the area under the home. I would not use it for storage, except for possibly extension ladders. The previous post gives the whys of it. A storage shed is more sensible for storage.

If you really want to utilize the space, I'd build a couple of air tight boxes (2 feet) and add wheels for easy removal, put a few mothballs inside and store Christmas decorations, folding chairs, etc.

our county building department threatened to fine us $450 per day if they found us storing anything in our crawl space. They will not allow us to install a cement floor without a building review. We cannot afford another delay in building our house.

Do you think they have legal right to say what you do with your house? They think so. The storage police are after me!

I cannot not find anywhere it says it is illegal to store items in crawl space. Does anybody know?

Building codes are there for a reason and if they say nothing in the storage space, then that is it. I would want to have unobstructed access to pipes, etc.

Hi Patti: While it seems like an attractive place to store stuff, I wouldn't. Critters could get in there and some are not very friendly :) Not only that, if you have to get to the pipes because they've broken, you'd have to move all of the stuff that got ruined because of the burst pipe before you fixed it. So, I'd just leave it alone.

Crawl spaces also serve as hubs for critical utilities such as plumbing, electrical wires, and HVAC systems, making maintenance a breeze. Additionally, properly ventilated crawl spaces are designed to help control moisture buildup and reduce the risk of mold and structural damage.
