We have a queen size bed and a narrow room. Does anyone have any inexpensive idea for a bookcase headboard? Thanks!

You might also want to consider making a bookcase on the sides / footboard of the bed. -a friend of mine recently used pallets and crates from Micheals to free up room in her very small bedroom - think about how you want to live with storage before buying anything -

Did they use the crates as a foundation and put the mattress on top of that?

Might use some old doors stripped and sanded or painted.

I am always trying to do things with very little money so I get where you are coming from. If you could do some driving and are comfortable with asking strangers, Drive through residential areas alleys and see if anyone is removing an old fence. Most of the time old fence boards still have a lot of "meat" left, It is usually just the ends that are decayed, Trim them down and you have really nice,(sometimes cedar, which = score!) wide boards. Those + some drawers from an abadoned dresser and voila, right in style and only going to cost you the hardware , paint and elbow grease. Google image "shelves from old drawers"

Use inexpensive wood to build. Actually scrap wood is great for this type of headboard. Use a level (or water bottle (clear) that you can see it is even) square up and make as tall as needed.) glue and/or use a brad finisher or thin finishing nails. Stain.
