How can I build an inexpensive trellis for my egg gourds to grow on?

Check out local stores for wooden pallets that they will be discarding. They can be stacked and cut into any shape you would like . Then paint white and attach to a board that has been cemented in the ground.

Can also try plastic trellises, they bend a little, but make sure they are secured to the wall or boards.

Look for an old wooden ladder at thrift shops or yard sales. They make great temporary trellises!

You can pick up wood slats at the hardware store; lay them out in the standard pattern & using a staple gun, staple them together to the size you want. least expensive: put an eye screw into the overhead above your plants, run several pieces of twine through the eye screw & down to the ground, attach the twine to a series of stakes pounded into the ground & train your gourd vines to climb it. My Grandmother used to do that with her sweet peas.

We used Nylon Trellis Netting for our cucumbers and that worked out great, plus it's very inexpensive and available at most home improvement stores.

I also used the nylon netting, but for my pole beans, I ran it across metal stakes and just used zip ties to connect it to the fencing below it to make it a little more stable as my pole beans stress out everything I have ever used as they get really big and thick and weigh a ton. So far I am on my third year with it and it has withstood harsh winters with out a problem. Once I put up something like that it is permanent until it gets taken down to be replaced. I got mine at Walmart, but have seen them in other garden centers also. They are unobtrusive as they blend into the background and are almost unnoticeable once the plants are growing and covering it.

Look for wood pellets lying around. Screw together for height or width, depending on what size you need. Leave natural, stain or paint, depending on your décor. Place some pellets under your trellis on the ground to show off your potted plants or garden veggie, add outdoor chair for relaxing. Check with a home store, hardware store, nursery or landscaping store...sometimes you can get the for free!
