How do I build a small patio outside my basement door?

We have a water drainage problem here as well. If we get a downpour and the gutters get overwhelmed, the water comes in the basement through doors. What can we do?

Sounds as though you need larger downspouts and gutters. Solid gutter helmets are also very helpful, but the water still needs diverted via underground extension pipes toward your front street. You may further need French drains, or a "Hydro Blox" system, to move water away from your home. Can you regrade the area to hasten water movement away from the house? Your soil may need analyzed for amendments. Contact your local extension agent or code officer for better assistance.

If pouring a cement patio make sure you grade it away from the doors. Also get extensions on your down spouts and aim them away from the foundation.
