How do I put up a fence around my yard that doesn't need a permit?
I want a fence around my yard so I don't have to worry about my fur babies and my kids getting hurt because I live on main street.

Hi Jerry, if you live in an incorporated town or city you'll need to comply with the regulations in place. Some places do not require a permit, but do have laws in place for how high the fence can be as well as how close it can be to the street or public sidewalk. Best to know what your constraints may be before you buy fencing or start the work. It would be terrible to put a fence in and then have to remove it because it isn't in compliance with local regulations.
Call your city planning department and see what your city codes are for fences, be sure to mention if you are on a corner as they are usually lower. If you have a HOA, be sure to consult with them as to types of materials allowed, color and height, and do you need prior approval.
If you hire a contractor, that person should “pull the permit”. If you built the fence yourself, and if the ordinances allow, I recommend a 6-8’ wooden fence with wooden caps on top and bottom and a cement foundation. You will need to restain or repaint every 3-8 years, and replace broken boards as they occur. If your fur babies include cats, I suggest chicken wire to line the fence. Pull your own permit and do a good job! ☺️
