What's the best way to add an overhang extension of the back of house?

We need an overhang (extension) added to the back of our house. All we have now is a 10 ft. square slab and our the back faces west which is where the brunt of the heat is in the afternoon, so we are not able to enjoy any of the afternoons with get-to-togethers with friends and family. What would be the best solution to get the maximum protection from the sun to where it looks great and increases our home value and at the same time using our back yard area as much as possible?

Troy, I'm sending you a whole bunch of sites to look over. The solution we had for the evening sun in the west was building a pergola over the deck. We cover it with canvas panels, but now we wish we had put a permanent roof on it. I hope this helps, let me know.
