Find the studs with a stud finder. Mark with a pencil so you sink the screws into the wood behind the dry wall NOT the drywall itself. Use L brackets to attach something cool like a snow ski, a skateboard or two, reclaimed wood, that he can display things on.
You can purchase shelving board. Many stores will cut them for you. Then use shelving brackets. Hang brackets on the walls where there are studs and then affix the boards. I did some very pretty in pink for my daughter using this method.
