How do I make a walk in closet out of a whole small bedroom?

We bought a very old house with 3 small bedrooms and small square deep closets. The 3rd bedroom has a traditional long shallow closet and is the smallest room. This seems the ideal place to renovate into a walk-in closet using the existing closet all for shoes, belts, purses and totes. We have mostly hanging clothes to deal with. How do I ensure the hanging rods will be sturdy enough for the weight?

Yes, that sounds like a great answer to your floor plan Andrea! I've actually used a small bedroom space for closets in several of my home renovation projects, either for myself, or for clients. My favorite hanging rod system is Easy Track. The metal track screws to the wall, (you need to find the studs in the wall to mount it to) Then the components, rods, shelves etc. all hang off that single metal track.
With Easy Track you can buy the pre-set combinations, or you can buy the components separate. I always find it works to mix and match. Here is a link with many choices for componenets! I wish I had a post already written to share with you now for the actual process, but I haven't written it yet. I will be in a few weeks... so be sure to check back on my DIY & decorating blog for it. :) Simple Decorating Tips
You can purchase all kinds of brackets for this purpose. Check out your local hardware store to see what is available. As long as you place the brackets in wall studs you will have the strength you require to hang a lot of clothing. Head to IKEA and purchase some nice wall units.
There are many brands of closet retrofits available. Most closets are designed with a shelf and a long rod under that. That gives you lots for room to hang long stuff, but also leaves a lot of dead space. Installing an other rod or adding dividers and drawers can really maximize your storage.
See the question about “How to store a lot of shoes...”. There is a beautiful closet pictured there.

Go to the explore projects button towards the top of the window and look at all the walk in closet designs. Your room will be larger most likely, but you should be able to incorporate many things that you like into your room to make it your dream closet! Have fun designing your closet room, Andrea. It should make a good winter project! Be sure to post your project so we can see it when you are finished!
