If you turn the toaster up side down (unplug it first), there is usually a plate that has a small hinge on it. The bottom opens up and you can clean all the crumbs out. If not, just turn it upside down and shake them all out. Please be sure to unplug first!!
Sometimes they have a crumb tray that pulls out to empty. If not, just unplug and turn upside down over the kitchen sink and give it a good shake.
Unplug the toaster. Then turn toaster upside down over the wastebasket or old newspaper and shake it or gently tap it. This gets most of it out. Then look at the bottom of the toaster, there should be a release clip that will open the metal plate on the bottom of the toaster so you can get the rest of the gunk off.
There is usually a door on the bottom that opens to dump the crumbs and clean it.
Most have a trap door on the bottom, and an old toothbrush works great for getting any sticking crumbs.
