Best odor remover out there is baking soda. Mix a cup of baking soda with a cup of hot water and add to a wash cycle without clothes to eliminate residue odors from your machine. To remove strong odors from clothing, 1) do not pack the washer -- too many clothes in the washer or in the dryer don't provide enough circulation, 2) add the baking soda/hot water combination to your load, 3) use Nathan Sport-Wash in lieu of your regular detergent. This should do it unless it is skunk odor. If from a skunk, soaking overnight in tomato juice is best!
there are products made specifically to clean washing machines. it removes soap build up. i have how ever dumped borax and baking soda cup of each into my he machine to get rid of the odor. ran it on hot water only low fill.
is it top loading or front loading? Is it an HE washer? It does matter what you have when treating
Try a no-clothes cycle with hot water, a cup of bleach and a cup of baking soda. Then leave the lid (or door) open between washes. There is always some water left in the bottom of your machine and it can become stagnant. Fresh air is one of the best prevention methods. I have a front loader and leave it wide open most of the time.
Once problem solved leave lid open when not in use. Clean monthly with affresh or bleach without clothes.
Borax
First get Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner and clean the machine. After doing that, always use vinegar as your rinse/softener for every wash load. Since doing this, I've had no problems with mildew smells in my front loader, which would smell within a week or two.
Buy Odo-ban. Run with clothes that stink then wash with detergent. Purchase at Wal-Mart.
Use white vinegar in the wash
Put some Bakin' Soda inside your machine and close the lid. It is worth a try:))
bleach will kill the odor from the machine. Add some to a load of whites or dish towels, or just run a quick cycle with just a healthy dose of Clorox. Should kill the bacteria and moldy smell.
