How to clean rusty cookie sheets?

  • this is solution I saw in Rachel Ray magazine once

    1. Rinse the pan and shake it dry – do not wipe with a towel because you want it to be slightly damp.

    2. Dust it lightly with baking soda (it should stick because of the remaining water), making sure you cover the spots that are rusting.

    3. Leave the dusted pans for about half an hour.

    4. Clean the pan gently with a scourer making sure you get rid of all the rust leaving just the exposed metal underneath.

    5. Rinse the pan to get rid of all the baking soda and towel dry it.

    6. To make sure your pan doesn’t rust again coat it with cooking oil.

    If they are still in good shape and you don't have other uses for them, I just put foil on them, or parchment paper if I am making cookies. If it is covered, the rust won't hurt anything.

    To completely dry my cookie sheets, or any of my baking pans, I put them in the oven while it is cooling down from my baking session. No more rusted pans. Hope this helps

    Should have added......after I wash them and towel dry them, I put them in my oven to finish drying.

    Brillo pads. They already have soap in them but you could add a little Ajax. Scrub a dub.

    You might consider making magnetic storage out of them... there are lots of projects on Pintrest and Home Talk turning them into something pretty..

    You can continue to use them by covering them with aluminum foil or parchment paper but they will just continue to rust since they can't be "re-sealed" ... You might want to think about replacing them...there are some really good quality ones out there such as those by "Food Network" and "Pampered Chef" (I have both, that are over 10 years old and no rust) ..Tip: hand wash and keep out of the dishwasher if they have a non-stick coating.
