My burner caps have turned grey around the edges where they used to be black.

This appears to be a problem with many gas cooktops. Bar Keeper's Friend will clean the lower sections to their nearly original look.
I am talking about the burner cap. The dark portion of the burner cap is what I am talking about. I can clean the rest
I use oven cleaner from the dollar store. I spray the burner caps, put them in a ziplock bag overnight and in the morning just rinse off. They come out like new. I have been doing this for years with great results.
