CLR and Lime Away are similar products that work on rust. This is a good opportunity to look closely at the source of the rust.
Those drain “collars” will lose their chrome plating over the years and will continue to rust until they leak and have to be replaced. If yours is at this stage, keep a bucket under the drain until you get the “collar” replaced.,

For tougher rust stains, make a paste of two other pantry staples: three parts baking soda and one part vinegar. Apply it to the rusty surface with a scrub sponge, and let it sit for an hour. When you rinse it off, the rust should be gone, though, for more severe stains, you may need to repeat the process.
Feel the stain around your sink drain...is it rough like a calcium deposit? I had that on my faux marble sink and I shut the drain and put about a cup of vinegar in it. Let it set over night and the next morning it was much better, but still a little rough. I then took a nylon scrubbie and rubbed that around the drain, and it was smooth again and stain free. If I had a porcelain sink, I would have used a pumice stone but was afraid it would scratch the faux marble.
