Maybe the washing machine needs a clean...try a cup of Vinegar and a high wash cycle...only do it 4 times in the year. and keep the door CLOSED...when not in use

Try washing machine cleaner. They sell it next to the other laundry products

Don't put so much dirty washing in at once? Or pump is deficient? that's assuming you have done some empty wash cycles to try and clean up...........

use washing machine cleaner, leave the door open a small amount to vent.

This is what Sears told me do about mine.

Leave the door open after use so that it dries out, the tubs always have water left in them that you can't see. Clean the gaskets really well, that could be part of the smell, especially in the folds. Use a washing machine cleaner suggested by the manufacturer.

I have also just run a empty load with bleach or specific cleaner for front loaders (run on hot or sanitize if you have that option). Make sure you clean the gasket around the outside of the tub, it is a huge mold gather. Also the glass window around in the front door, especially on the under And you should have a filter near the floor on the front of the door. Make sure you have a pan or thick towel under it before you unscrew the filter itself. 99% of the time this filter will need a good wash too. Our water is really hard so I get a lot of lime build up in there. And as one of the other answers, always leave the door open when you are not using it. The owners of the house we are in now left it closed and it took me a good week of running load after load to get it to smell better again

if it is a front loader this is a major issue with them - you can go online and google your brand and get ideas but what I do is keep the seal dry after I finish washing clothes, leave the door open and look for mildew and get that up- run an empty load with hot water and white vinegar that helps too
