If you want to get rid of it now rather than wait for it to evaporate use a hairdryer to heat the wax and then wipe off with kitchen towel.

Thank you for your advice, as the fire is on most days we will try soaking it up with kitchen roll also advised to use talcum powder.

You can use an iron and brown paper bag. Tear the bag into sections larger than your area of candle, then heat your iron and iron the brown paper and your candle spot will disappear. This will also work for candle that has dripped onto carpet or furniture. Good luck. P.S. if you are afraid your iron will get some of the wax, then cover the bottom of the iron with aluminum foil.
