Try coke. Let it soak in coke the acid will eat away the debris -

I use Awesome Orange in the spray bottle and a dish brush, then wipe with rag or sponge. -

Soak them in a hot water/dawn soap mixture in your sink. After awhile take a steel brush and go over the grate. Depending on how bad the grates are...will determine how much work it will be to get it clean. -
