Hi Lyn! Before you try the sandpaper or blowing the whole toilet bowl up (lol) try this ~ Bar Keepers Friend, Borax and white Vinegar. Pour 1/4 cup of Borax and Bar Keepers into the toilet bowl and swish it around with a toilet brush. Then add 1 cup of vinegar and allow the mixture to sit in the bowl for about 20 minutes. Finish by scrubbing the bowl with a toilet brush to remove hard water stains. Hope this gets rid of all that nastiness!
A NEW TOILET!!!
Have you tried a pumis stone?
its plain coke not diet coke and koolaid, try using a pumice stone, soak the toilet with white vinegar followed by baking soda
Clr...for bathrooms. that can be iron build up...I have seen worse....when I bought this house. Bleach products wouldn’t touch it.. if there is a scally ring around the water line..scrub it off with a pumice stone. You can also force the water in the toilet out thru the drain, and scrub the bowel with comet/ cameo/ scouring powder of choice.
There is a product out there called CLR that is made to remove calcium, lime and rust. It is available at home Improvement stores and even grocery stores. I would give that a try first. Just pour it in the bowl following the directions on the bottle. Good luck!
We use a product called iron out that works great for getting rid of iron stains. You can order it off of Amazon and a number of other sites
Turn the water off to the toilet. Flush the toilet. Remove all the water in the toilet. Use Easy Off No Fume Oven Cleaner in the BLUE can. Spray the toilet and let it liquefy. Scrub with a toilet brush. Turn the water back on and flush. Works on enamel, porcelain, and fiberglass tubs also. Do not sand or you will damage the porcelain coating and it will never come clean. If this doesn't work replace the toilet.
I too have hard water. Vermont Country Store catalog sells a great pumice stone for toilet cleaning.
I had that problem years ago with well water with rust in it. It looks like you have that too. This is what I used and it worked really good and can be found in many stores.

good advice William! Don’t ever sand or use pumice on the interior of your toilet bowl, the abrasions will be even harder to clean and can harbor more bacteria!
Flush the toilet and then pour a quarter cup of Borax into it. Use your toilet brush to swish it around. Next, add one to two cups of vinegar and let the mixture sit for 30 minutes. You should be able to scrub the stains away!
My toilet was bad. Emptied the bowl and used a steam cleaner (be careful and be gentle). A lot of work and not fast but it worked.
Need to buy a new toilet!!!
Before you do anything try The Works toilet bowl cleaner. The original thin one. That stuff melted iron stains without scrubbing where others never worked. That stuff has some potent stuff in it and it’s cheap and everywhere like Walmart. I’ve used it on rust stains from the faucet outside too.

Whew, that's a challenge! Drain the toilet bowl by shutting off the water and flush until the bowl is empty.
Spray with Easy Off No Fume Oven Cleaner (blue can). Spray it on and let it hang out there until it becomes a liquid, clean with a toilet scrub brush. Anything rough and abrasive will etch the toilet bowl and it will never come clean, so you want to avoid scratching it.
Hi Lyn, hope this helps you out. You can purchase pumice stone for this.
