Can't help with a home remedy, but Carbona 2 in 1 Oxy-Powered Carpet Cleaner does a fantastic job. I've cleaned up some problems that I expected would require replacing the carpet!

If the poop is more solid than runny, let it dry & it is easier to pick up. Clean any stain remaining by pouring rubbing alcohol on the stain. Let it sit for just a little bit (less than 1 minute). Dab/rub the alcohol soaked stain with a rag--an old washcloth is good. Fold the rag a couple of times & dab/rub with clean area until the alcohol is absorbed/dried. If there is more stain, repeat. Final step, place a dry, clean rag folded into fourths on top of the cleaned area & place a couple of heavy books (or anything heavy & the appropriate weight) on top of the clean, dry rag on top of the stain. Let the books stay on top until the rug is completely dry (you can dismantle the rag/book stack & feel of the rug). Once the rug is completely dry, a good vacuuming is in order. Good luck.

Once you have cleaned up the actual mess, there is a product that is amazing called Nature's Miracle that has taken out more animal stains that I could have imagined. Its an enzyme based product that will eat away at anything remaining on the carpet and not hurt the carpet. I would never be without it with cats and dogs in the house.

We have always had a wet or dry vacuum to clean up pet mishaps. Clean up the solids with a paper towel then use warm water and the wet vac to pull up the rest. A pet stain cleaner may be needed but we rarely needed it.

I agree completely... and adding a little vinegar will remove all pet odor as well. (The smell of vinegar goes away after an hour or two.)

How long has the residue been on the carpet? What kind of carpet is it? These speculations need to be stated before answers are given as remedies that bothers have used may not work on yours.Color as well.

Oxiclean is my go-to for any carpet stain. Clean up the solid waste first, of course, then, using fairly concentrated mixture of Oxi and water, scrub the stain until the carpet is clean, resoaking your cloth frequently. Don't get it too wet-wrong the rag out well before scrubbing. Rinse out the rag and rinse off the area with the rag and allow to dry. Repeat as necessary. You can also use a combination of water, Dawn and hydrogen peroxide.
