I was in the bridal business for 32 years and considering that your gown was made in approximately 1974, I would follow the previous suggestions and have it professionally cleaned by a REPUTABLE cleaner. However, many gowns that were manufactured from the late 1980s/forward were made mainly of polyester. Check the tags. Many rental businesses would spray the stains with a stain remover, turn them inside out, and wash them in cold water on a gentle cycle. Take them out and hang them up to dry and steam press them. ONLY do this if the gown is 100% polyester, which you would be surprised how many are.

I agree. Let the professionals handle it. Always good to get it cleaned and preserved before storing it.
