i gave up on vac's and went to a sticky roller lint type to pick up the treads.
Joanne,. Try this! Take and unscrew a broom handle. Take a lint roller along with a paint roller with a handle. Put the handle into the bottom of the paint roller. Slip on a lint rolle with out the handle.. Roll it on the floor, this is a quick pick up. The handle, an empty paint roller, minus the roller. Attach the lint roller to the place where the roller was. This should pick up the stray pieces of yarn. Aloha!
I sew as well and have a lot of hair on my floors. I have a Shark and it does an amazing job. You might want to consider this fix. I've had one for 15+ years. Just rinse & re use. My issue was kitty litter and I didn't want to suck it up into my vacuum.
