Mildew inside gun safe

by Deanna E
Help we just realized that our guns, rifles, shotguns everything is covered in mildew/mold inside of safe! This is a nice 6 foot carpet lined safe never been wet at all. Now ALL the stuff is clean that was inside, but WHAT do we do about the inside of the safe? How can we be sure were getting rid of the problem? Thank you! Dee

  • I am not too sure how helpful this is, but, something we use to keep our ammo nice and dry are the sillica packages that you get in differing products. The "warning, this is not gum, do not chew the contents of these packages" type of product.

@RCooper @ thoughtsbyher.com Yes I think it is a good idea to add something like this in the save as a way to prevent this from happening again in case the heat goes out again or what ever. Thanks so much!!!

You can buy a heat strip to put in the safe. We have a big safe as well and haven't had a problem since purchasing the heater. They are made for safes.

I have never heard of needing a heat strip inside a safe so this is helpful. Our home heat is not working as well which is not helping. I'm concerned of how to get rid of all the mildew that is inside safe now since we will not put anything back in until it's clean. I have a carpet steam cleaner....safe is lined with carpet... but then would have to really set up one heck of a drying system so that it won't be moist at all for any length of time. Thanks so much!!!!

I bet if you placed some charcoal in a dish,or into an onion bag that would absorb any moisture.Make sure there is no lighter fluid in the. Briquettes.Good old damp rid you can buy at walmart or any other hardware store should also work.Needs to be replaced on a regular basis.

All great advice. Husband is going to check out a heat strip and see if we need to treat/clean the inside carpet or if the mold was just "growing" on the organic wood sources. I'm glad I thought to come here for advice.

You have to identify the source of the moisture which is enough to cause mold and mildew. May be a lack of circulation - are there air vents in the safe? Condensation by warmer air in the house hitting the steel? I'd remove everything, including the carpet, and give the safe and weapons a wipe down with bleach water to kill any wayward spores, etc. and let everything dry really well.. I'd also leave the carpet out until you see if this works - there may be moisture coming from it somehow. Those silica bags would be a good idea - lots of them..

If it is a fireproof safe they are made with sealed moisture in the lining of the safe and will cause it to mildew. The silica packets or possibly rice will help but make sure you open the safe from time to time to release any moisture buildup

    Gun safe dehumidifier
  • Remove the carpet and wipe it down with vinegar. Cut a hole in the back for a cord with a lightbulb. The heat should help.

Do you know those little pacs inside stuff you buy? I think that are some type of silcone or something. I save those and they would be perfect for your gun safe.
