Try mixing dawn shampoo.half and half of each. If it takes grease out of clothes why not Vaseline. I use it on white and or dark clothes.
Vaseline is a petroleum based product, a by product of the oil and gas refinery process. You will need to find a product made especially for dissolving grease, which will be something from the oil and gas refinery process, such as naphtha (white gasoline) or a dry cleaning product. Both are flammable and should NOT be used inside the house, needs to have lots of fresh air movement to dissipate the fumes. Water based cleaners (detergent) won't be strong enough to dissolve and remove the oily stain left in the fabric. If the stain is on a cushion that has a cover that can be removed, I suggest that you remove that cover and take it to your local dry cleaning company. They usually have specialized cleaning solutions that will remove every trace of the Vaseline. Don't be disappointed if the cleaning bleaches (makes it lighter) than original color; Or, leaves a somewhat darker mark under the stain area. Removing oil based goop out of synthetic fabrics, such as polyester, is nearly impossible because it bonds with the molecules in the structure of the plastic-like fibers, which are themselves products of the oil and gas industry. What ever you try to use, be prepared to do a lot of hard work getting the residual vaseline removed and the stain out. The best case suggestion is: Call your local floor covering company and have them come out and use their carpet cleaning machine and products and get the entire sofa cleaned.
