Cleaning old barbies

by Kathy
I purchased a tub of 50 old barbies at a auction. The legs are all soft plastic and torsos hard plastic. The legs are all sticky! Need ideas on cleaning legs.

I would try Murphy's Oil soap.

Mild Dish Soap and patience . Soak them a few at a time and use a semi soft scrubbie , like Scotchbrite to get to the tough parts . You might want to grab a wide tooth comb for the hair .

@@Kathy , I hope it works , Ajax is usually what I would use for anything requiring a long time cleaning process . It's a thinner dish liquid and mixed with water is is less foamy than say Dawn . And Bonus is it is very cheap and does the job , under a buck for a bottle : }'s

Apparently this is a sign the plastic is disintegrating and some articles mention the possibility of hazardous toxins leaching out of the plastic. Here are a couple links you might find helpful/informative and you can probably find more if you search "sticky doll disease," which is the name that has been coined for dolls with this affliction.

I would try putting them in dish washer on top rack only. This works on many random items that are heavily soiled.

  • Susan Susan on Aug 30, 2014 They have everything you need to clean up old dolls. They are also extremely helpful. I wouldn't use anything else.
