How can I find out why my house smells musty all the time?

There is no visible mold anywhere. I use the fan after showering and have added DampRid containers around the house. It still smells especially after we have been gone a few days. Unfortunately, my sense of smell adjusts so quickly I cannot determine if the smell is coming from any particular room.

  • Are you close to the water? Do you have the house open to air out? Might be time to call someone in to solve the mystery. Chances are it is something simple that might be overlooked - like a leaky sprinkler valve or something. Try walking around the entire house at various times of the day to see if there is any unknown water intrusion, like a neighbors leaky sprinkler or something. Then if necessary, call the mold people in for a consult. Good luck! Would drive me crazy too.

    • I know exactly where you are, I am a 45 minute drive away - I take my dogs to the beach at the harbor. And get fish and chips at Andrea's . . . And used to go camping down the street at McGrath State Beach. šŸ˜

Something is damp. Probably hidden in a wall...or attic. Have a housing inspector come and evaluate. Occasionally their thermal cameras will find a cold spot...is your basement holding water? Or attic -I had a really bad mold issue in my basement. Water was coming in above the bathroom fan And following gravity made it to the basement.

We don't have a basement. We are on a concrete slab. New roof a few years ago and since we live in Southern California, we don't get much rain.

Ellen, this is one to call in an expert. Mold is no joke, and can make you very sick. Maybe after you get some help THEN you can DIY the solution. Good luck.

Agreed. Mold forms in the walls, floors, ceilings usually due to a water leak. You need to find the source which means call in a professional. The repair will be dependent on where you find the problem.

Open windows on a nice day, and if you think its humid, get a dehumidifer.
