white vinegar helps. Pet stores also sell something that will remove that smell.
The vinegar smell dissipates as it dries.
there are commercial products for for pet messes. they contain enzymes that break down the pee vomit and feces. naturals miracle is one i've had good luck with. cat pee is an oil based wee, not water based like us poor humans. so something oil breaking like a mild soap or diluted dish soap. baking soda sometimes works to pull the moisture out of the carpet. you need to get as much as the smell gone or if there is another cat in the house, they might start marking as well. there is another product called odo ban. it works an pet mess as well.
If it is on your rug or furniture, I would replace or take the covers off and wash well. Otherwise, it is really hard to completely get rid of cat urine on wood and fabric.
PURE VANILLA EXTRACT --- works wonders. I inherited household items years back-- that wreaked with ALL KINDS of cat fumes-- I misted/sprayed everything with PURE VANILLA EXTRACT in a spray bottle with water. I used distilled water- as there are NO CHEMICALS in the distilled water. In addition I put out saucers of 1 folded paper towell pad soaked in the straight PURE VANILLA ... worked wonders . These make very good room deodorizers too! (People ask-- have you been baking?) -- This also works for PAINT FUMES!!!!! The pure vailla molecules in the air actually chelate (like magnets) the "toxic" fumes molecules right out of the air and neutralize them. This did a major miracle on those inherited items (included a brand new queen sized, very heavy, box springs/mattress bed set.) It took about 3-4 days before verything was totally gone ... BUT IT WORKED!!!! There was never any further "hint" of "cat" anything after that -- THANK HEAVENS! (PS-I'm very allergic to ANY KIND of cat stuff!!!)
