How to clean aluminum pot and lid.

I have an aluminum pot with lid. I use it once a year. This time when I needed to use it, it has rusted and pitted under the rim of the lid, on top of the pot and down inside of the pot. Could some one please share how to remove the surface rust, then the pitted rust. After cleaning the lid and pot is there a paint I could use and be safe with food cooked in the pot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. !!!!!!!!!!

  • true aluminum doesn't rust, you can try a paste of salt and lemon juice and a brush to try to remove the rust.

If you get the rust off, you should still be able to use it if the aluminum is intact and whatever is under the aluminum isn't showing. Aluminum shouldn't rust.

After cleaning it (I'd use a soap infused steel wool pad like a Brillo pad), just put a small amount of cooking oil over it. It will keep the lid from rusting. Wash it off before using. It's like the first step in seasoning cast iron pots. Much better than any paint that may peel from the heat, unless you used high heat paint and I don't know how safe that would be for cooking.
