I have used a commercial copper cleaner but does not clean completely.
After cleaning, is there any way to keep it from turning dark again?

Try vinegar and table salt.

Once cleaned, I would spray it. Life is too short - antique or not. My home is 100+ yrs old - brass door hinges, light fixtures, etc. Polished them up and sprayed with Clear Coat (auto finish). No more cleaning up tarnish for me.

I have used Braso ( not sure on the spelling) but it works great. Then I do as Marion Nesbitt said, I put a clear coat on it to keep it shinny and pretty.

I have used ketchup on a rag to polish the copper ., then finish with Braso cleaner.

believe it or not, regular toothpaste not the gel kind does a fantastic job of cleaning either silver or brass. It does better with silver! good luck!
