The 1960's ivory and gold medallion wallpaper tends to streak when I tried to wipe it down. Low budget is my reason for choosing not to replace or paint over it.Would a complimentary contact border paper be a good idea in the ceiling area?

Have you tried cleaning it with a degreaser and soap and water? There are plenty of "How Tos" if you google " how to clean candle smoke off walls".

I would use the Mr. clean magic eraser, they work wonders, just need water with them no cleaner. They do work on several things. I can't live with out them.

The only thing I have ever had success with in washing off candle smoke from wallpaper is Magic Eraser. Works well but required patience and lots of elbow grease. Low budget forced me to scrub instead of replacing also. I used all the usual wall scrubbing products and carefully worked to wash and not harm. I made a dent but it wasn't clean. As a last resort I tried a Magic Eraser I had left over from another project. It worked! They don't last long so buy Dollar Store generic and get a ton of them. Good luck!

Originally the clay kids play with now was a cleaner for wallpaper. After electricity replaced oil lamps, there was no need to clean soot so, it became a toy with color added to it. So, you might try using white play clay. --- Not Silly Puddy! That stains!
