How to remove magnesium coming throught the grout of tlies

the tiles are laid on the cement in the basement. Not sure if it is calcium or magnesium coming up where the grout is ? It is white in color. The color of the grout is chocolate brown.

Hi Sharon, If it's calcium deposits, vinegar will remove them. -

Where in Canada are you located? Do you have a high water table in your neighbourhood? -

Its mineral salts either from the concrete under the tile and/or the mortar. Was the concrete floor sealed before you laid the tile? or have you had leaks in the basement? As long as moisture is present you will continue to have efforescence i.e. mineral salts.To get rid of use a brush to remove it and vacuum up. If this doesn't get rid of it, I would use vinegar and water as your acid to remove..... http://www.tecspecialty.com/blog/How-To-Prevent-and-Remove-Grout-Efflorescence.html?lang=English#.WjyMZb9zLIUYou might want to put a dehumidifier in the basement, and if it drys out and stops effloresing I would try sealing the grout in one area and see if it improves it..... if it does then do the rest of the floor. -

Are you sure it is not white mold? Try bleach and see what happens. Then try the dehumidifier and a heater.
