Wash the dry wall than seal and than paint. If you don't seal the stains will bleed through the new paint.Helpful Reply -

won't your insurance cover the cleaning from a fire? Ours did, and so did a neighbor when she had a kitchen fire. Sometimes you need to pressure the adjuster!Helpful Reply- See 1 previous

Try TSP - just follow the directions on the box. I've found that this cleans just about everything I've ever had on a wall. Also has cleaned soot off of my fireplace bricks. Be sure to wear gloves.Helpful Reply- See 1 previous

I have used the TSP substitute (non toxic) and hot water and a kitchen sponge, didn't have to wear gloves. Works great. If you have energy afterwards, you can rinse the walls with hot water and a cup of fabric softener. ( I do all of this to remove hard wallpaper paste, or to clean old paneling, prior to priming with Kilz, prior to painting walls & woodwork.) Best of luck.Helpful Reply -
