My wood fireplace smokes at startup.

Is there such a thing as a chimney preheater? Once the hot air rises up the chimey the draft starts and all is good.

Crack a window on the other side of the room to create an updraft in your chimney when you are starting the fire. Once the air is warmed, it will rise by itself.

Light a piece of kindling or rolled up newspaper and hold under the damper to create an updraft....just take a minute or less.

Agree with Sal89502. That is what I do. Crack a window open, light the fire, then close the window once the chimney is warmed up.

The window is a good idea. I'd also make sure the fireplace has received a good cleaning and that there's no blockage.
