How do I clean this old tarnished mug?

Could be silver, could be pewter. Look for mark. This looks to me like it has some "age" I would guess pewter, just start to clean you could try silver polish and if it is pewter it will remain dull, silver should start to shine.

I'd have them appraised first before applying any product. If you absolutely know they are not antiques, then seek a silver cleaning product at your local Lowes, HD or Ace Hardware store. I personally use Weiman Silver Cream. Try a little on the bottom of your item to test the product out. Best of luck.

Try brasso.

Try plain white original toothpaste with no gel or baking soda or whiteners or anything. It will take some elbow grease to get through all the layers, but it should take it off.

I had seen a DYI hack may sound all so weird but I didnt try it but Smear ketchup all over it and rub n wipe it all off. It may all work all out

If it has a "coating" it is most likely a lacquer. You have to boil that off in a mixture of water and cream of tarter but google this first to make sure I am right.

Hi use baking soda and a little vinegar put it on and rub it won’t get it all but should get most of it good luck

You have silver plate over brass. That green tarnish is from the presence of copper/brass. That darker tarnish is the silver. Use a silver polish after you wash it. If it come up nice and you want to keep it from further tarnish seal it up in a plastic bag after you have cleaned and polished it.

I think it looks beautiful (in the pic) just as you found it. I would display it as is (never use of course)

Beekeepers Friend powder ( I, myself, dont like the paste ), mixed with a little water and buff away. Or the good old salt and a lemon. Put course salt on a half a lemon, as much as will stick, scrub away. 😏
