Remove rust from old gun barrel?
I have an old flint lock rifle (wall hanger, not usable) that has a lot of surface rust on barrel. What would be an easy method of removing the rust without further damaging the barrel?

Try a mix of vinegar and salt made into a paste, rub on and then completely remove again.
Gun oil and bronze wool(best) or super fine steel wool(0000)if you cannot find/use bronze wool removes rust and protects the piece from further rusting you can use liquid lanolin to keep it from rerusting, collecting dust this will also help condition the wood; or this might be easier for heavier rust https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-1ZbYXz2zs
I have used rust remover gel on flintlock barrels. It is available in different brands, liquid, and concentrate, and is readily available from hardware stores.
Depending on how much rust there is, you may also want to use some, as Lynn suggested, super fine steel wool (4zeros).
