My question as I watched these grandparents was always, "Why are you sweeping your yards, and why is there no grass around your house?" We have grass around ours.
Most sites offer ideas on how to make metal rust. For rust protection I found this product so I guess it comes down to a primer or paint on protection option. I am sure you will find more options, as well. For example, Rustoleum offers clear coat options in cans and sprays. i believe Home Depot sells something you can brush on or perhaps a way. You might consider spraying the panels with WD 40 but depending on the size of your project it could get pricey and I think you would have to re- apply periodically
