my dad fed the birds huge amounts of seeds daily. the sunflower seed shells were probably six inches deep under the feeder. IF he had raked up the seed shells daily, it wouldn't build up like that. i suggest rrake up everyday. or sweep up probably not good for compost pile. put in trash can

  • Put a bunch of bricks or pavers down around the feeder, easier to clean up. I have mine in a mulched bed, a tumbled pea gravel bed and on grass.

Worth every penny to buy shelled seeds at a supply company. No clean up whatsoever. You're paying by the weight anyhow and get more for your money.

I have a round picnic table that holds an umbrella through a hole in the center. The umbrella is broken so I made 4 rebar hangers held in the umbrella hole and curved outward at the top. Each of those rebar hangers hold bird feeders. The seeds fall onto the table. The birds and squirrels have a banquet table below to catch the seeds that fall. Mess is easily cleaned up.

Could you possibly add a screen or "catcher" of some kind below the feeder to catch the seed before it hits the ground?

If you are using small seed, you can toast in low oven and that will kill the kernel, so at least you don't get all kinds of weird little plants growing from the spilled seed!
