I sell a lot of silver on Ebay. Jewelry, silverware, serving sets. Silver polish like Wrights and dips like TarnX tend to remove some of the metal. The foil method doesn't work that great and still leaves a grey film that still needs to be removed. I use white toothpaste (not gel) and a damp toothbrush. For large items I use a damp cloth. Also works on copper, brass, gold, porcelain, ceramics, sneakers, plastics, etc. For my sales I needed one product for cleaning everything.

I think you put the silver and a large piece of aluminum foil in a shallow dish and cover with water. I think that's it. If not, not too much trouble to try.

I put foil in bottom of sink, shiny side up. Then pour in hot water, with a handful of washing soda. Place the silver in. Leave about 10 mins.

Use a disposable aluminum roasting pan, add some Baking Soda, and a sprinkle of table Salt. Shake the pan to mix the two a bit. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. When it gets to the boil, pour it over the soda and salt to dissolve. Add your silver and/or silver-plate items. Wait about 5-10 minutes then carefully remove one item at a time and inspect it. If the item has intricate details use a soft brush to scrub then return to the water bath. If the item looks to be finished, rinse in cold water then dry with a soft lint-free cloth to prevent water spots. This method can also be used for jewelry being careful of any adhesives that may soften with the heat.
