You'll need to see if there's a water leak somewhere and fix it. I've found that diffusing tea tree oil can help eliminate airborne odors.
I have noticed that my drains (kitchen and bathroom) can begin to smell. If water isn’t running down the drain regularly, sewer gases that normally washes it out of the system can make their way back up into your home. Even if you don’t plan on using the extra bathroom, it’s still a good idea to run water down the bathtub and sink drain at least once a week.
Smoking can make a house smell. I don't allow smoking inside my house at all.
Laundry rooms are famous for emitting sour smells. After doing a load of laundry leave the lid of your washing machine open so the inside can dry out.
Store things like paper, toys, clothes, or mementos in plastic, water-proof containers instead of cardboard boxes. Run a dehumidifier regularly in the basement.
Open the windows whenever you can to get in fresh air. Run ceiling fans to circulate air in the house, or even use a fan in rooms occasionally. See if you can isolate what rooms the odor is coming from and concentrate on that first. A spray of vinegar on the carpet will help with that, and the Febreeze spray for fabrics will take care of some of the odor from fabric furniture and linens.
Activated charcoal buy in bulk online or at fish/aquarium stores
Use a natural odor absorber like Activated Charcoal or Baking Soda. These products will absorb the smell, so you'll want to throw them away and replace them every two weeks or so. Place a small dish of baking soda in the enclosed area for up to 24 hours. The baking soda will absorb excess moisture and odors, and leave things smelling much fresher.
Plants also help to get rid of musty odors.
What Absorbs Odor?
Check your house for mold and mildew, if you find some use vinegar to kill the spores, avoid clutter, run a dehumidifier. kitty litter will take up odors along with baking soda. Sunshine and fresh air work wonders.
