How can I make porous natural stone coasters?
I want to hand paint designs on natural stone while keeping them porous for coasters. The designs will be simple outlines so not necessarily porous. What type of paint is permanent but won't bleed. I don't want to use stamps. Thank you.

Hi Tessa, this tutorial will help you make your coasters and show you how to seal them = https://www.thriftyfun.com/Stone-Coaster-Tips-and-Tricks.html
Have you tried using something like permanent marker as your "paint"? I think that, if you seal them, they won't be porous to absorb the condensation from your drinks anymore. If you have a few smaller stones of the type you want to use, you could try using permanent markers, like Sharpies, on the stone to see how it holds up.
Permanent colored Sharpies should work just great. Just be sure you purchase the ones that say "oil-based". They come in a wide variety of colors as well as a few metallic colors. More expensive than the regular Sharpies, but what fun they are. They come in varying tip sizes too. Available at Office Depot/Office Max stores. Then you won't need to seal your natural stone.
Have fun!!
Hi Tessa,
You might try alcohol ink, acrylic paint, or markers.

Knowing the type of stone would help to determine the best medium. The properties vary greatly and you want to make sure you use something that will permeate but not bleed.
Try tester pots if emulsion paint for walls for the job or maybe Sharpies!
